A tour diary by William...

Greenland in July means I'm on a posh four-engine plane again on my way to Seattle to start a two-week dash across the summer prairie. The pilot jokes about taking the aircraft 'home' to Boeing field. For the first time in a few years we are going to cross the whole country playing acoustic shows, a bit of an 'evening with' type of vibe and quite right too. Just Luke, Dorie and I, and no tour manager, we have a few copies of our new Water Taxi album in our bags, new hold-proof guitar cases and a nine gig, eight state, itinerary.

The smoking area behind the Seattle gig looks out over a fish canning factory and a bit of sound. Luke and I reminisced about a less responsible trip up the Space Needle many years ago with Ben Leach. We were joined onstage by Ian Lyles on percussion and we travelled with him to Portland for a great show at the Mission Theatre. I enjoy working with those McMenamins guys: great beer, great hamburgers and great venue! Ian took us to a cool bar after the show and we met some of the local music characters!

Flew into Denver and checked in to very nice rooms at the Best Western Boulder Inn. Thank you Arie and the guys for the welcome basket and bottle of red. Nice vibes. Fantastic night at Chautauqua, which I really enjoyed. What a wonderful venue. A few songs from this gig are up on YouTube. Off to the botanical gardens in Denver where we had a great crowd in a pastoral setting. Thank you all for coming and thank you to Shak. I hope people who got hold of the Water Taxi disc are enjoying it.

Up early and out over the desert, into Albuquerque for the two-hour drive to Taos New Mexico. Great Lunch with obligatory margheritas in the Plaza and then whisked off by the efficient Dan to the KTOA outdoor show. When we were on stage it was 68 degrees and the mountains were gold and blue in the sunset. Nice to see Brad and Robert Mirabel again. Thank you all for a brilliant night.

Culture shock in the wind surge of Dallas and a soggy arrival into a reverse Nashville reflected in the puddles on the runway. Fried chicken at the loveless cafe on highway 100 in the burning sun, as they say, a Nashville tradition since 1951. I enjoyed the show at 3rd and Lindsley and it was good to see Chris Stacey and Glen Worf in the crowd and afterwards at the Boundry.

Back to the real world courtesy of O’Hare and Philly and then quickly re-united with the bizarre in Jim Thorpe, a historic town in the hills of Pennsylvania. I recommend the Inn at Jim Thorpe to anyone, and thank you very much to Dan who organised our show at the Mauch Chunk opera house. We will be putting a few tracks from this gig up on the site in the next few days. We did a couple of radios there as well, which was fun.

Sunday on the parkway, and all manner of recreational vehicles, farm produce, and boats trundle by the tinted AC hum of our hunky 4 by 4. It gets us to Arlington in record time and demonstrates the same stamina as it did in the desert. We might be a bit rough but they have Shiner Bock at the Iota club and we have a good gig.

Into Washington and we have to drop the car at the train station rental return. I feel anxious as I run around the huge classical station with a back pack and a sweaty countenance, trying to find Avis, and can't relax until the first Heineken lid flips in to the buffet bin on the New York train. Spat out in to the river of 8th avenue and a mini van yellow cab on our way to a hotel in the Bowery. You can smoke in the room hurrah! Paul Crockford and an engineer friend, Pat Dillet, come to see the show in New York and we had a great dinner afterwards on Mulberry Street. The next day we visit Pat's funky studio before our ride out to JFK and another posh four-engine plane!

What a great tour and thank you so much to Luke, Dorie, Ian, Lauren, Lisa and PC for helping make it so much fun, and thank you to the fans who came out to see us!
