Dear All,
Back from a week in Wales with Chris Difford and his songwriting crew.
We stayed at Hurst House on the Marsh, a hotel on a salt marsh, near Dylan Thomas' house in Laugharne, Carmarthenshire. www.hurst-house.co.uk
There is a huge derelict castle by the sea in the village. It has a real 'Houses of the Holy' feel to it. This is the coastline that informed his work.
'When the corals fill your bed when the crayfish block your tides 'till there is love in your wanton heart will all our sea faiths die.' Or something like that.
Suitably inspired we got down to the usual business, at breakfast a list of writers are set out by Chris and all go off to different parts of the hotel to come up with a song. In the evening after dinner everyone performs whatever it is that they have been able to come up with. Faltering at first, by the middle of the week the standard is amazingly high. Chris has been running these informal get togethers for seventeen years now, after getting the idea at one of Miles Copeland's writing weeks in France.
It was great to see my friend Chris Sheehan again and we wrote a fun song called 'But Do Blondes prefer Gentleman?' I also worked with Charlie Wood from Memphis TN, and Kit Clark from the band Danny Wilson. Dorie was there, as she sings with Chris Difford for her day job!
It was all good fun and thanks to Laura and Becci at the hotel.
Last week Luke and I were down in Studio 99, and he put some superb guitar on the acoustic tracks.
We did versions of 'Sweetheart' and 'Water Taxi' and a song from Harbour Island called 'Watch the Wall'. I hope to have the album ready by Easter, it is sounding really good! Thanks Mike.
The first blossoms were out in Wales. 'The lark is on the wing, and the snail upon the thorn'
Ici Printemps.
Best Wishes
