I am back from a second trip to a windy, but still wonderful, Provence where I have been writing with Dominic Miller. We have recorded two new songs and hope to do some more work together when his busy schedule allows. It is great to be re-establishing old writing partnerships at the beginning of a New Year. I am seeing Colin Vearncombe this week and have already got three new tracks going with Luke. I will put up some of this music on the site as it becomes ready for your expert scrutiny.
I love being in France. Are there any two cultures in the world that are so different in their outlook whilst being only 21 miles apart than La Republique and the United Kingdom?
I enjoy heading off the francophone faith in the arrogance of Les Rostbifs by assuring them that in my humble opinion Britain is France's most successful colony! That wrong foots 'em every time and cassez's la glace very nicely.
The lone diner in the cafe hunched over his 'steak frites' and with a couple of pitchers of vin de pays behind his belt, feels the warm approval of the spirit of Graham Greene cher maitre de Chez Felix in the harbour of Antibes. As W.S Maugham said the Riviera is a "sunny place for shady people" but it is significant that so many well travelled foreigners have made their homes here. I would if I could but zut allors, the power of the Euro!
So it's back to reality, the drizzle over Gatwick, the easyjet sandwich and the marigold gloves Her Majesty's customs for this Preux chevalier, but I can dream can't I?
